What is yoga?

Yoga (/ˈjoʊɡə/;[1] Sanskrit, योग Listen) is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India. There are a broad variety of Yoga schools, practices, and goals in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Among the schools of yoga are Hatha yoga, Raja yoga, Ashtanga and Kriya yoga to name just four. Practices include Asana (postures), Pranayama (movement of the prana or life force through breathing and other exercises) and Meditation. Asanas are what most in the West simply call yoga. These consists of bodily postures and stretches. We feel it important to differentiate that postural yoga is actually only a small aspect of Hatha or Kriya yoga. This will help the student if he/she wishes to investigate the other forms later. Helena is a student of the Vajrasati school of Hatha Yoga. Dave studied Hatha Yoga in Rishikesh, India.
